Delightful and festive, these cookies are perfect for Halloween parties and gatherings, appealing to both kids and adults with their whimsical decorations and delicious flavor.

Ingredients

  • 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Royal icing or fondant
  • Food coloring (orange, black, green, purple)
  • Sprinkles and edible decorations (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the dough: In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla extract, mixing until combined.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, stirring until a soft dough forms.
  3. Chill the dough: Divide the dough into two disks, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least an hour.
  4. Roll out the dough: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about ¼-inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to shape cookies into spooky designs.
  5. Bake cookies: Place the cookies on a lined baking sheet and bake for 8-10 minutes, until just starting to turn golden. Let them cool on the sheet for a minute before transferring to a wire rack.
  6. Decorate: Once cooled, use royal icing or fondant to decorate your cookies. Add food coloring and sprinkles for fun designs.

Notes

Keep dough cool while rolling out and experiment with different flavors and textures for the icing.
