A warm and comforting dish that brings the classic flavors of Cracker Barrel right to your kitchen, combining tender chicken and fluffy dumplings in a rich broth.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 1 cup diced carrots
  • 1 cup diced celery
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup butter (softened)
  • 1 cup milk
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook the chicken: In a large pot, bring 4 cups of chicken broth to a boil. Add the chicken breasts and cook until they are no longer pink inside, about 15-20 minutes. Once completed, remove the chicken and shred it, reserving the broth for later.
  2. Prepare the dumpling dough: In a mixing bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of baking powder, and 1 teaspoon of salt. Cut in 1/4 cup of softened butter until the mixture is crumbly, then stir in 1 cup of milk to form a dough.
  3. Cut the dumplings: Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface until it is about ¼ inch thick. Cut the dough into strips or your desired shapes.
  4. Cook the vegetables: Bring the reserved chicken broth back to a boil, then add 1 cup each of diced carrots and celery, along with 1 teaspoon of onion powder and the shredded chicken.
  5. Add the dumplings: Drop the dumpling strips into the boiling broth. Cover the pot and cook for about 15-20 minutes until the dumplings are fluffy and cooked through.
  6. Season and serve: Taste the broth and season with additional salt and pepper as needed. Serve hot, enjoying the cozy richness of this classic dish.

Notes

For best results, allow the chicken to cool slightly before shredding. Make sure your dumpling dough is even for uniform cooking.
